Indian art and culture inspire interior design. It can bring beauty, tradition, and character to your home, from delicate paintings to grand sculptures. Let’s see how Indian art may inspire beautiful, meaningful environments.

1. Vibrant Colors and Patterns with core Indian Elements: Infuse your interior design with the vibrant colors and intricate patterns of Indian Art. Find inspiration in traditional Indian textiles like Banarasi silk and Kalamkari fabrics, and consider incorporating them into accent walls, furniture, or decorative items. For a touch of Indian charm and tradition, innovative techniques like a wood cut banana painting can be used  as a wallpaper in the bedroom that not only beautifies the space but has a deeper meaning as well. Banana symbolizes fertility and that is indeed very apt to find a space in the bedroom.

The exquisite wood-cut bamboo painting used as a wallpaper in the bedroom adds a visual wow factor along with a deep conceptual meaning

2. Spiritual Symbols and Icons: India’s spiritual heritage offers profound inspiration. Incorporate sacred symbols like Om, lotus, or peacock to evoke spirituality and divine beauty. Display statues or artwork of Indian deities like Ganesha, Lakshmi, or Saraswati for a sense of devotion and serenity.

The drawing room has a prominent 3D carving on one wall, of the Indian goddess of Knowledge – Devi Sarswati

3. Carved Wood and Intricate Details: Indian woodwork is famous for Carved wooden furniture, swing seats adorned with intricate upholstery, and intricately patterned panels embody Indian design. These utilitarian objects display Indian artisans’ skill and history.

The beautiful carved wooden furniture can be seen in this section of the drawing room space and the swing seat with traditional Indian upholstery material

 4. Folk and Tribal Art: Folk and tribal art reflect India’s culture. Madhubani paintings, Warli art, and Pattachitra can be used to decorate walls, frames, and furniture. These painting forms bring rural life, mythology, and customs into your house.

The captivating pattachitra in the drawing room brings mythological narratives and folktales to life, adding visual enchantment to the home

5. Textured Fabrics and Handloom Weaves: Indian handlooms are famous. Hand-block printed or needlework silk, cotton, or jute furniture, drapes, and cushions. Textures and weaving offer Indian-inspired dwellings depth and authenticity.

Indian art and design make authentic spaces. Brilliant colours, spiritual meaning, flawless craftsmanship, and traditional art forms give Indian-inspired houses elegance and comfort.

The visuals above are taken from our showcasing at ABID 2023 titled SPARSH and it was designed on the theme as encapsulated below.

“SPARSH” or “touch” in Hindi/Sanskrit is a theme that evokes feelings of love, intimacy, and sensuality. It is broadly inspired by ancient Vedic or Indian text.

In addition to the use of physical textures, the theme also incorporates elements of sensual design such as curved lines, plush furnishings, and organic shapes. These elements work together to create a sense of movement and fluidity, adding to the overall sensual feel of the space. The design of Sparsh was intended to create a space that is both beautiful and functional, and that evokes a sense of connection to Indian culture and tradition. The use of traditional Indian motifs and patterns, in combination with contemporary design elements, created a space that is both timeless and modern.
