The month-long celebration of the world’s largest sporting event, the FIFA World Cup 2022, which is currently being held in Qatar, began on November 20, 2022, and will end in December 2022. This tournament features 64 games between 32 teams at eight different stadiums in Qatar.

You might be surprised to learn that Qatar only had one stadium when it was chosen to host the FIFA World Cup in 2022. But in order to host this year’s FIFA World Cup, it has built seven stadiums that are both amazing and futuristic.

Here’s the theme of Qatar’s eight stadiums for the FIFA World Cup 2022

1. Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor city has been designed with the rich fabric of its culture in mind to replicate the Al Sha’ar, the tent historically used by Qatar’s nomadic people. The stadium’s exterior has been decorated with black and white stripes to match the Al Sha’ar tents. The sitting area is decorated with vibrant sadu patterns, which is the rug used by Qatar’s nomadic people.

2. Lusail Stadium in Lusail city has been designed to represent the traditional Qatari fanar lantern’s interplay of light and shadow. The shape and façade of the stadium are based on the intricate patterns that were used to decorate bowls and other vessels during the Arab and Islamic worlds’ Golden Age of Art and Craft.

3. Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium in Umm Al Afaei city has been designed in such a way that the surrounding buildings reflect aspects of local culture and traditions. The detailed exterior of the stadium reflects the undulations of sand dunes, while intricate geometric patterns reflect the beauty of the desert, native flora, and fauna, as well as local and international trade.

4. Al Janoub Stadium in Al Wakrah city has a captivating design that reflects the wind-filled sails of Qatar’s traditional “Dhow boats”—a tribute to Al Wakrah’s fishing and pearl diving past. For centuries, these magnificent boats have sailed through Gulf waters and beyond, returning laden with the bounty of the sea.

5. Al Thumama Stadium in Doha is inspired by the “Gahfiya”, a traditional woven cap worn by men and boys across the Arab world. Gahfiya is an important part of family life and tradition that represents the upcoming youth in a boy’s life, which is a period of growing ambition and self-assurance that heralds the beginning of future steps and the fulfilment of dreams. It is a major source of inspiration for this unique stadium.

6. Education City Stadium in Al Rayyan city is inspired by its surrounding universities, whose corridors buzz with new thoughts and ideas. The stadium’s ultra-modern design blends in with traditional Islamic architecture. Triangles on the exterior of the design create complex, diamond-like geometrical patterns that sparkle as the sun moves across the sky. A digital light show illuminates the facade at night, providing fans with a spectacular surprise performance.

7. Khalifa International Stadium is located in Aspire city. The stadium’s iconic feature is its beautiful dual arche, a sizable canopy has been spread out underneath them. It combines with the stadium’s cooling system to maintain a pleasant temperature for players and spectators.

8. Stadium 974 is located in Ras Abu Aboud city.  It is the first fully demountable covered football stadium and is entirely built out of shipping containers and modular steel, demonstrating Qatar’s commitment to innovative design and cost-effective sustainability.
